I enjoyed this post. I am one of those young persons just recently getting into genealogy. This is the first post of yours I have read and heard. I am an new administrator for my surname Y-DNA project. The project started in May of this year. We also call it a "surname group" to include all things genealogy for this one name study. I know of a few group members who have put many years of research in our surname genealogy which reaches back to the 17th century. I feel there is a fine line I'm walking and don't just want to say "give me every thing you have". I have e-mailed a couple of members about 3 weeks ago asking them as politely and respectfully as I knew how if they could upload their GEDCOM files to our group site if they had one. They have not done so and have not replied to the email request.
I will search your blogs for topics on Y-DNA surname group projects as soon as I'm done typing this comment. I am looking for information on how to encourage all group members to share more of their information particularly family photographs and family memorabilia and GEDCOM files would be nice too. Thanks DearMYRTLE. I have become a new fan!

Hi, love your podcasts and listen to them on my iPod when at the gym. I was especially happy to hear about the technical aspects of podcasting and recording voices. I do interviews with a small attachment to my iPod and it creates excellent digital voice recordings. I have Audacity and Roxio Easy Media Creator (Sound Wave)editing software... I've got a lot to learn!!! I've started using "Gizmo5" similar to Skype to talk to my cousins in England and Wales for 2cents /minute. The record feature of Gizmo5 does have an echo, I'm sorry to say -at least on the call I tried. I want to do recordings by phone with lots of distant relations. Keep up the wonderful podcasts and know I wait expectantly each week to download it. Aloha, from Donna in Hawaii

The link in your comment response works for me too. I'm also able to right click on it and download it.

If you'd like to email me directly, use the email on this comment. I don't have any trouble with others contacting me at the byu.edu address. I guess I may have mistyped it. The byu and this email address are the same to the left of the ampersand.

Thank-you for your patience. There is a glitch with the 4 Mar 2008 DearMYRTLE’s Family History Hour genealogy podcast episode on the server side. I’ve been patient in that three times we’ve waited overnight for the GoDaddy.com servers to properly update the cache. Now the tech support people have given my incident report an “escalated” status.

So, in the mean time, here is a stop-gap measure for listening to the podcast:

Click to download the 55.1MB file directly from my website:
http://www.DearMYRTLE.com/DearMYRTLE2008Mar4.mp3

When I tested this link just now, it immediately opened opened Windows Media Player and started playing the file.

GoDaddy.com is one of the nation’s leading website and podcast servers. Let’s hope they resolve the issue of the failure of their software to integrate my uploaded .mp3 file with the text and links that I provided as usual. For your convenience, Ol' Myrt has reproduced the show notes on my blog at:

http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2008/03/challenge-4-march-2008-podcast-episode.html

BTW Gerhard, every time I attempt to reply to your @byu.edu email address directly, the ol' Mailer Daemon replies immediately that the email address does not exist.

Myrt
