GUESTS THIS WEEK
Susan Goss Johnston discusses American military records research. She is a principle speaker at Saturday's free American Military Research Seminar and Workshop hosted by the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society, in association with the Livermore Family History Center, August 9, 2008, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore, California. Susan has advised students to print out and bring with them, "An Overview of Records at the National Archives Relating to Military Service," by Trevor K. Plante (Prologue Fall 20002, Vol. 34, No. 3). Susan feels this article is an excellent starting point for researchers. (This segment begins 5:39 minutes into the podcast.) What drew my attention to Susan's presentation is the component of comparing known surviving military record groups with online availability. Susan recommends:
-
NARA's website: http://www.archives.gov
-
Footnote: http://www.footnote.com
-
Ancestry: http://www.ancestry.com
-
Susan's website on Military Research is helpful and includes practice exercises.

Elizabeth Powel Crowe, author of Genealogy Online 8th edition. This week Libbi suggests options for those wishing to become professional genealogists. Be sure to subscribe to Elizabeth's blog, the Crowe's Nest. (This segment begins 35 minutes into the podcast.) Links to groups discussed during the interview include:
Chris Lydiksen, Ancestry.com Product Manager, U.S. Content. Since Feb. 2004, Chris has been focused primarily on U.S. content strategy, acquisition and production. So far this year, Ancestry.com has released over 200 books in scanned image format, part of their "book a day" project. Key content collections released in 2008 thus far include some 40 additions to the site. Chris recognizes the void with the missing 1890 US federal census and tells us that other state census records are in the pipeline to assist researchers around this brick wall. (This segment begins 45:36 minutes into the podcast.) Links we discuss during this segment include:
